From Documents to Data: The Real Transition in Academic Publishing is in the Plumbing

From the proverbial 30,000 feet (or 10,000 meters), academic publishing in 2026 is undergoing a significant set of structure changes - maybe challenges is the correct semantic expression.

Sure, we continue to speak about open access, preprints, and AI but I would suggest that most of that conversation is occurring at the surface. The real shift maybe more fundamental at the infrastructure level - in the plumbing.
