Best & Co, Fifth Avenue 1968

Fifth Avenue and 51st - August 1968

Close watchers (and there are several) will know there have been several images from this roll taken while my parents were visiting in 1968.  My father took in some summer classes at Cornell - where he also met the guy that hired him for his next job - and then met my mother in NYC.  I am pretty sure this is a late morning/mid day shot and if you have visited NYC at anytime in the past 15 years you probably know this area is always swarming with tourists.  Here the sidewalks look quite manageable.

Roof Top Gardens Midtown 1968

In the old days you used to be able to walk out onto these roof gardens as part of the tour of Rock Center - at least I assume so since I have a photo from this set of Mrs PND senior standing on the grass down there. Now you can get something of a view of them if you go to the top floor of SAKs which I did a few years ago but I would like to go out to one of these gardens just once.  I've guessed that this image was taken mid morning on a weekday and, assuming that, it is interesting to see how much less traffic there is both on the roads and on the sidewalks.

Falls Don't Change 1968

Niagara, New York 1968
The PND Seniors visited in 1968 when PND senior was attending Cornell for the summer.  I've never been but I am thinking of ways to put it in my schedule.

Mrs PND recently unearthed some of her family's slide collection and sure enough there's an image similar to this one from 1958.  Not that much different admittedly hence the title.

Another weekly image from my archive. Click on it to make it larger.

In addition to the images I've posted on Flickr and those I've periodically posted on PND, I have now produced a Big Blurb Book: From the Archive 1960 -1980 of some of the images I really thought were special.

I now have an iPad version of this book for sale ($4.99) on the Blurb site which you can find here: STORE

I have to say, even on the iPad the book looks pretty good.

US Open Tennis 1972, a set on Flickr.
Mr and Mrs PND are off to the US Open tomorrow. Here is the archive set from 1972 when PND Senior went to see some of the greatest players ever: Ashe, Laver, Evert, Smith. I've only been twice before (and the second time we were rained out). The first time in 1996 was fun and the tickets were $20 which is less than a hamburger will cost me tomorrow. We'll have fun nevertheless and if I can photo half as many stars as this set I will be pleased with myself .

Image: Next Up Baltimore

This is for the guy I had lunch with today who mentioned how much he enjoys these images.

Most of the images I have from the archive are stamped with the month and date, generally in red as we all remember.  This month and year represents the date the roll was processed yet more often than not there must be many instances when the images on the roll we taken over a space of time different than the date stamp might imply.   Also, the roll may have sat unprocessed until the travellers returned home.  I comment on this because occasionally you get a break and can identify the date of an image quite accurately which is the case in this image (which comes from a set taken around Manhattan in 1968).  I've named all these images assuming they come from September 1968 which is what the stamped date tells me; however, if you look closely at this image of the (now) old Yankee Stadium you can see that they will be playing Baltimore on August 6th.  I wonder if they won; and, I am sure someone could look that up.

The image is dirty for which I apologize but then so is that jet spewing exhaust and thankfully we don't see that as much anymore.  Can anyone identify the red delivery van?

There was never a reason to think the towers weren't permanent.

Ithaca McDonalds 1968

Ithaca McDonald's, August 1968
Another weekly image from the family archive. Click on it to make it larger.

My father attended summer school at Cornell's Hotel Management school in 1968 and one of his professors worked for Intercontinental. Long story short he suggested they hire him and later in 1968 the family left for the first assignment in Thailand.

In my first family trip to the US (Los Angeles) in 1976, I remember distinctly the itemized number of hamburgers served on the golden arches. I wish I had a comparison photo but I am certain it was ten times this number by then.
