While listening to an interview with Colin Kaepernick on Crooked Media recently and his reflections on how NFL owners were easily able to crush dissent and enforce silence made clear the disproportionate power owners can have on leagues and other teams. Kaepernick merely dared to kneel during what is a ridiculous habit of sounding the national anthem at any event and has been banned from his chosen profession ever since. The NFL is a different beast compared with other leagues because there is no light between the league and the owners. At least with the UK Premier League there exists a set of rules and laws which all the teams – despite having similar American owners – all agree and adhere to.
That is with the exception of Manchester City Football Club. The winner of 22 titles, championships and other trophies since 2008. In Man City, we have an owner who appears to regard the laws of the game as optional and the deterrents and penalties as operating expenses tied to return on investment. If the enforced penalties are only financial that will confirm to all owners that money is the answer to any grievance – other stakeholders and the integrity of the game be damned.
